Oktoberfest 2024: The beer prices in the large festival tents

A popular Oktoberfest tradition even before the tapping: every year, Munich residents grumble about the beer prices set by the festival hosts and breweries. The City of Munich only checks that the beer prices are reasonable and has no influence on their structure. The prices for the Oktoberfest 2024 were announced on July 3.

The six Munich Oktoberfest breweries

In keeping with tradition, only beer from Munich breweries is served at the Oktoberfest. Six breweries have this privilege, each brewing their own pale beer for the Oktoberfest, which is stronger than the usual "Helles".

This beer must meet three requirements: The raw materials must comply with the Munich Purity Law of 1487 (water, hops, malt and yeast), the water must come from a deep well in the Munich city area and the original gravity must be at least 13.6%. Everything else is in the hands of the master brewers.

Augustiner
The Augustiner brewery was founded in 1328 by monks of the Augustinian order, making it the oldest brewery in Munich and still privately owned today. At the Wiesn, Augustiner beer is traditionally served in 200-liter barrels, the so-called "Hirschen".

Hacker-Pschorr
The Hacker-Pschorr brewery was first mentioned in 1417 in Sendlinger Straße. After the division between the Hacker and Pschorr families in the 19th century, the brewery has reunited the two historic brands since 1972. The brewery now belongs to the Paulaner Group.

Hofbräu
Founded in 1589 by Duke Wilhelm V, Hofbräu is known for the famous Hofbräuhaus am Platzl and is owned by the Bavarian state. The brewery itself has been located in Riem since the 1980s.

Löwenbräu
The Löwenbräu brewery can trace its roots back to 1527. In the 19th century, the brewery was the largest in Munich for a long time. In 1950, the mechanical lion roared for the first time at the Oktoberfest. Since 2004, the brewery in Nymphenburger Straße has belonged to InBev together with the Spaten-Franziskaner-Löwenbräu Group.

Paulaner
The Paulaner brewery was founded in 1634 by monks of the Paulaner order, making it the "youngest" of Munich's Oktoberfest breweries. For a long time, the brewery was located on the famous Nockherberg, but is now brewed in Munich-Langwied.

Spaten
Founded in 1397, the Spaten brewery first introduced "Münchner Hell" in 1894. Since 1807, the Sedlmayr family has managed the brewery, which together with Löwenbräu is part of the international InBev group.
