How is the SAP Garden structured?

The oval SAP Garden blends harmoniously into the landscape of the Olympic Park and refers architecturally to the tent roofs of the Olympic Stadium. The arena is only 20 meters high, but visitors still have an unobstructed view of the park. The façade is structured with pilaster strips and has glass entrances. The highlight of the 29-metre-high interior is the 360° video cube above the playing area with 41 million LEDs on four 9.5 x 5.5-metre side panels.
In addition to the main building with the arena for up to 11,500 spectators, there are three separate ice rinks with a total ice surface of around 5,400 square meters. One hall with grandstand holds 600 people, the other two 200 people each. This is where ice hockey training and popular sports such as ice skating, short track and curling take place.
The green roof with its flower meadow has a terrace that is open to the public on non-match days and serves as a smoking and lounge area on match days.
Which clubs play ice hockey and basketball in the SAP Garden?
For the DEL ice hockey club Red Bull Munich (formerly EHC Munich), the SAP Garden fulfills a long-cherished wish for its own arena. Until April 2024, the professional club played its home games in the Olympia-Eissporthalle, which has a capacity of around 5,700 spectators, is getting on in years and is to be demolished.
The reigning basketball cup winners and multiple German champions FC Bayern Munich already have a venue for around 6,700 spectators at BMW Park in Sendling, which will continue to be used. Initially, the basketball team will play its Euroleague games at the SAP Garden on an expected 20 match dates in the first season.

How does the ice arena become a basketball arena?
The creators came up with the newly developed dual-rise construction for the change from the ice arena to the basketball arena: the ice surface remains permanently in place, while a stage is pushed over the ice during the conversion to the basketball court, creating a 10-centimetre-high air cushion between the two floors and only resting on the ice with a few peaks. Additional stands are added to the smaller basketball court, for which only the windows of the ice hockey boards have to be removed. With this technique, the conversion only takes up to eight hours.

Mayor Verena Dietl and Sports Officer Florian Kraus officially handed over the underground ice rinks in the new SAP Garden to amateur and club sports at a press event on Friday, August 9, 2024. From August 12, all sport enthusiasts and visitors will be able to use the SAP Garden daily for ice hockey, public skating and much more; tickets are available now. There have never been more ice rinks under one roof in Munich.
Who built the SAP Garden?
Construction work for the SAP Garden began in January 2020 on the site of the former 1972 Olympic cycling stadium. The foundation stone for the sports venue in Munich's Olympic Park was laid on February 23, 2021. The Austrian drinks group Red Bull is financing the arena, which will cost around 150 million euros. However, the Baden-Württemberg software group SAP has secured the naming rights. Copenhagen-based architects 3XN Architekten and landscape planners Latz + Partner from Kranzberg are responsible for the design.
