Geschwister-Scholl-Platz: The most important facts at a glance
Today it serves as a popular meeting place for students. The lawn around the fountain is a comfortable place to lie, study and talk. The square with its fountain is the forecourt of the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich and has a great historical significance:
- Origin : In the course of the construction of Ludwigstrasse and the LMU under King Ludwig I, the square in front of the main building was also created.
- History : During World War II, the Scholl siblings studied at the university and founded the resistance group against the Nazi dictatorship "The White Rose". In the main building of the university they distributed anti-regime leaflets and were arrested for this by the National Socialist secret police Gestapo and subsequently sentenced to death.
- Naming : In memory of their work, the square at the university was named after them.
- Remembrance : in front of the university entrance, attentive visitors will discover the last leaflet of the movement, inscribed in stone here.
- Memorial : In the entrance hall of the LMU is the so called "DenkStätte" memorial with an exhibition on the White Rose.
- Directions: From the Munich central station, you can take a U-bahn, U5 to Odeonsplatz and then U6 to Universitat, and walk for a minute to the spot.
