Overview: What makes Nymphenburg Palace Park so special

  • The 180-hectare park is considered an absolute masterpiece of garden art
  • The canal running towards Nymphenburg Palace is particularly spectacular, and gondola rides are also possible on it

  • In addition, there are other impressive structures in the park, such as the Monopteros Round Temple, the Pagoda Castle in the north and the Amalienburg and Badenburg castles, as well as the Magdalenenklause.
  • Water also plays an important role. Because not only the canal, but also the Badenburg Lake and the fountains with their water features are worth a look
  • Getting to the Palace from the City's main central station is not so far with S-bahn.

Walk between baroque buildings and nature

You can easily spend a whole day in the Nymphenburg Palace Park - and relax in the best possible way.

The 180-hectare park has many quiet corners and places to sit with a truly unique view. The park combines baroque stylization and free nature.

Relaxing near the lakes and bridges

The Monopteros Round Temple, beautifully situated on Lake Badenburg, is a real eye-catcher. There are many benches for relaxation and individual sculptures like the Pan with a spring welcome you.

The second smaller lake is located in the north: At Lake Pagodenburg it is usually quiet and often water birds and ducks cavort on the shore.

Mostly you are all alone in the north at the Pagodenburg Park with its ball pond. Although: frogs, dragonflies and many small animals are also at home here...

Small palaces: Badenburg, Pagodenburg and Magdalenenklause

No other park in Munich has so many impressive buildings to offer:

  • The small palaces such as Pagodenburg to the north and Amalienburg and Badenburg to the south of the palace are worth the visit alone.
  •
  • The Magdalenenklause to the north of the parterre, which was originally intended as a hermit's dwelling, is a particularly exciting sight - it is actually located in an "overgrown" grove.

Castle canal and gondola flair

East of the park, facing the city, is the magnificent Nymphenburg Palace with its castle roundel. Directly in front of the castle, a terrace and water fountain welcomes you.

Not far from there is the Nymphenburg Palace Canal which flows through the entire palace grounds. You can even take a gondola cruise on the Nymphenburg Canal - from early in the year till mid-October (Fri. to Sun. - 11 a.m. to 6 p.m, and Mon. to Thur. - via arrangement).

There is also a Botanical Garden north of the palace.

Water fountains and cascades

Looking for photo opportunities or want to feel like you're in the Baroque era?

  • Pretty garden art, cascades and sculptures can be found in the special gardens such as the Crown Prince Garden and the Cabinet Gardens.
  • A highlight are the large water fountains, which are driven by a pump system that is over 200 years old and will once again spray the water into the air from Easter.

Background facts: Design and history

Nymphenburg Palace Park was built between 1715 and 1726 as a baroque court garden of Nymphenburg Palace. French garden, architect Dominique Girard - also known for designing the Schleißheim Palace Garden and the Belvedere Garden in Vienna - designed the park with support from Joseph Effner. They worked on the "two parks in one" - the geometrical baroque garden and the adjoining forest park.

At the beginning of the 19th century, Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell was commissioned to modernise the park. He retained only a few elements from the baroque part of the park and transformed the other parts to a natural-looking landscape. Worthy to note that since 1823, the park has served Munich residents and visitors as a place of recreation.
