Construction measures for second core S-Bahn route

On April 5, 2017, the official groundbreaking ceremony was held at Marienhof for work on the second core S-Bahn route through Munich. Construction fences, excavators and cranes will thus continue to dominate the scene at Marienhof in the coming years.

A multimedia information center on Dienerstraße tells visitors all about the major project. From the roof terrace, visitors get a view of the entire construction site when it is open.

Archaeological finds at Marienhof and their historical significance

In the course of the construction measures for the second core S-Bahn route, the Marienhof was archaeologically investigated as early as 2011. Numerous excavations from the 40-meter-deep excavation pit confirmed the historical significance of the site.

The finds, which were dug from deep layers of earth, date back to the time of the city's founding and revealed twice as many special objects as originally suspected: tableware, books and shoes from the Middle Ages could even be assigned to individual citizens by name through existing municipal records.

Another sensational find is a sherd from a latrine, which is said to date back to the 11th century and poses a riddle to archaeologists as to whether the city of Munich is older than previously assumed.
