Wiener Platz: The most important facts

Wiener Platz is the heart of Haidhausen, a traditional Munich district that since the 1980s has turned into one of the most popular and thus expensive quarters of the City.

  • History: Wiener Platz was named after the adjacent Innere Wiener Straße, which was the beginning of the connecting road from Munich to the Austrian capital Vienna in the 19th century.
  • Market: One of Munich's four permanent food markets has been located here since 1889. The "Wiener Markt" is considerably smaller than Viktualienmarkt in the city center, but you will still get everything you need here: Fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, bread and - of course - a cup of coffee.
  • Hofbräukeller: This traditional pub right on Wiener Platz has one of Munich's largest beer gardens.
  • Shopping: There are many small stores and boutiques in the area.
  • Highlights: The market, of course. Plus: The maypole in the middle of the square, donated by local residents, and the idyllic Maximiliansanlagen park behind Wiener Platz.
  • Opening hours of the market: Basically during the legal opening hours. On weekdays until 6 pm and on Saturdays until noon you will always find open stalls. You can get there with the U4 to Max-weber-platz and a short walk to the market.

In the northwestern corner of the square lies the Hofbräukeller, owned by the Steinberg family, which also runs the Hofbräu tent at the Oktoberfest. It is famous - apart from its delicious beer - for its huge, shady beer garden. The restaurant borders directly on the Maximiliansanlagen recreation area on the Isar River and is one of the most beautiful in the city.

From 1896 to 1988, the Hofbräu beer brewery was located here. Before that era, the beer was brewed in the Munich Hofbräuhaus at Platzl, which is world-famous, but too small for a brewery. When the premises at Wiener Platz also  became too cramped for production in the 1980s, it was moved to Riem in the east of Munich.

What remained was a restaurant that is very popular with the people of Munich. In the large hall on the second floor, it is also possible to get married or celebrate another event.
