The atmosphere in the audience was outstanding, with Andreas Ströbl, project manager of Host City Munich in the Department of Education and Sport, and Kathrin Lehmann, Munich's ambassador for UEFA EURO 2024, among the fans. Lehmann had a particularly good time that evening in the packed WERK7 theater, as she was born in Switzerland and cheered on her compatriots' victory accordingly.

The first official ImproEM took place in Munich from April 18 to May 19, 2024, as part of the city's preparations for UEFA EURO 2024. The competitions were spread across the entire city.

The best improv groups from 18 European countries met in the group stage and improvised their way into the hearts of the audience and towards the final. Each team consisted of three outstanding improvisers. On the city's theater stages, they developed stories, created characters and unforgettable moments in front of the audience. Referees ensured compliance with the rules, which were closely based on soccer.

The football metaphor was also used on stage: The teams were given jerseys, the yellow and red cards were drawn and in the end it was all about the big trophy. All on the famous pitch, of course. Only in a theater. The common language on stage was English.

The audience dictated the topics and the improv players reacted at lightning speed to new ideas and impulses. Ultimately, the audience decided who won or lost.

To underline the motto “Long live diversity”, the improv shows were accompanied by an intercultural supporting program. For example, drag queens, a Bulgarian choir and the Rainbow Sound Orchestra Munich performed in the respective supporting program.

The ImproEM also made an important contribution to the European debate and made its presence felt. On May 5, for example, a gondola of the Umadum was used by improv artists as part of the European May in Munich.

The following teams took part in the ImproEM:

Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, England, Estonia, France, Greece, Italy, Liechtenstein, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Türkiye
