How to get to the Oktoberfest: Routes, tickets, stations, apps

Directions to the Oktoberfest at a glance

• By subway: The stop Theresienwiese (line U4/U5) is located directly at the festival area. However, it is very busy here, especially in the evenings and on weekends, and waiting times must be expected at the escalators
• Since parking is almost impossible nearby, public transportation is the easiest and cheapest way to get to the Oktoberfest. In addition, the S-Bahn, U-Bahn, bus and streetcar run more frequently than normal during the Oktoberfest.
• Around the Theresienwiese you will find many stops to reach the festival area on foot.
• During the Oktoberfest, a ring road for cars is set up around the festival area
• The MVG app has its own function that determines in real time how you can get to the Oktoberfest fastest depending on the rush.
• Balloons and beer mugs are not allowed on S-Bahn trains. At peak times, you should also not take bicycles with you to avoid bottlenecks.
• Travel with as little luggage as possible. In addition to the storage facilities at the Oktoberfest, there are lockers at the main train station, but they can be quickly occupied.

On foot to the Oktoberfest: From the main station and Hackerbrücke to Theresienwiese

Starting point Main Station (Hauptbahnhof)

• Leave the Main Station through the south entrance and follow Bayerstraße to the right until you reach the intersection Hermann-Lingg-Straße
• Then turn left once and walk directly to the main entrance of the Oktoberfest.
• If you need orientation: Just follow the ground markings
• After the Oktoberfest, you can of course take the same route back to the main train station. But beware: The last trains of the evening are usually full - so if possible, take the second to last train back to the hotel.

Starting point S-Bahn station Hackerbrücke

• On the way there, you simply have to follow the crowds. You leave the Hackerbrücke to the south, turn diagonally left into the Kurt-Haertel-Passage and then walk along the Martin-Greif-Straße. After about 10 minutes you will arrive at the main entrance of the Oktoberfest.

Where are the big taxi stands at Theresienwiese?

• In the north: Intersection Schwanthalerstraße/Theresienhöhe and Schwanthalerstraße between Martin-Greif-Straße and St.-Paul-Straße.
• In the east: Kaiser-Ludwig-Platz between Beethovenstraße and Schubertstraße and Herzog-Heinrich-Straße between Kaiser-Ludwig-Platz and Mozartstraße
• To the south: Hans-Fischer-Strasse between the Theresienwiese south entrance and the Theresienhöhe junction (daily from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.)

Those who reserve play it safe and can save money

The taxis are often already waiting at the exits of the festival area. Right after the tent closes, however, it is no longer so easy to catch a free one. Therefore, it is best to reserve a cab in advance. Since September 1, 2023, fixed prices for taxi rides can be agreed on request when booking by phone or app.

In any case, make sure to only get into a taxi with a taxi sign and taximeter to avoid being transported by fare dodgers for significantly more money. By the way, prices are no higher than usual during the Oktoberfest.

Which ticket do you have to buy?

From the main station to the Theresienwiese subway station you need a short-distance ticket (for the outward and return journey).

To the Oktoberfest by car

• There is no possibility to park at the Theresienwiese. During the Oktoberfest, a cordon is set up around the festival grounds where parking is prohibited.
• If you still can't do without your car, it's better to park outside or in one of the city center parking garages and then take the S-Bahn or U-Bahn.
• There are also Park+Ride lots for most freeway routes.
• In Munich, the entire area within the Mittlerer Ring is designated as an environmental zone. This may only be entered with a valid green sticker.

Tips for a safe bike ride to the festival area

If you don't have a bike, you can simply rent a MVG bike. The rental bikes are distributed throughout the city and can be rented after registering via the MVGO app.

• There is a lot going on around the festival area: cars, pedestrians and other cyclists - so ride very carefully.
• Remember exactly where you have parked your bike - otherwise the search will begin later in the dark.
• For your own protection and that of other visitors: please only ride to the Oktoberfest and back home in a sober state.

E-scooters not allowed in the barrier ring for Oktoberfest

E-trekking scooters may not be driven or parked within the outer barrier ring around Oktoberfest.

No-lending and no-parking zones will be set up. These will apply from 5 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day in the extended perimeter around the outer ring road (Hackerbrücke, Hauptbahnhof, Karlsplatz/Stachus, Sendlinger Tor, Kapuzinerplatz, Lindwurmstraße, Pfeuferstraße and Ganghoferstraße).

Nine collection areas will be set up around the restricted area for parking e-scooters. The already existing parking areas will be deactivated:

•     Mozartstrasse, west of Goetheplatz
•     Beethovenplatz
•     Pettenkoferstrasse west of Goethestrasse
•     Theresienhöhe, north of Schwanthalerstrasse
•     Hans-Fischer-Strasse, west of Theresienhöhe
•     Alter Messeplatz, east of Schießstättstrasse
•     Schwanthalerstrasse, east of Bavariaring
•     north of Hackerbrücke
•     Bavariastraße, west of Poccistraße

Ride home from the Oktoberfest with night buses and night lines

You were at the Oktoberfest for a longer time and then went to an after-Oktoberfest party? With the night lines you can go back to your hotel.

•     The NachtTram N17 (Amalienburgstraße - Effnerplatz, Sendlinger Tor - Effnerplatz as SEV) stops at Hackerbrücke.
•     NachtTram N19 (Pasing - St.-Veit-Straße) serves the stops Holzapfelstraße and Hermann-Lingg-Straße.
•     NightTram N40 (Großhadern - Kieferngarten) and N41 (Fürstenried West - Dülferstraße) can be reached at the stops Goetheplatz and Poccistraße.
•     The night bus N45 (Münchner Freiheit - Ostbahnhof - Waldperlach) also stops at Goetheplatz.
•     The night bus ring lines N43 and N44 stop at Herzog-Ernst-Platz.
•     Other night lines cover the entire city area. The central transfer point is at Karlsplatz (Stachus).
•     The subway trains run until after 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights - one hour longer than usual.

Where are the rickshaws waiting at the Theresienwiese?

Four parking spaces for rickshaws are designated at Theresienwiese:

•     Corner of Schwanthalerstrasse/Martin-Greif-Str.
•     Corner of St.-Pauls-Platz/Hermann-Lingg-Str.
•     Pettenkoferstrasse
•     Esperantoplatz

Tip: Negotiate the fare in advance

To avoid a rude awakening, it's best to discuss the fare before you set off. Although there is a price list in every vehicle, the actual costs can vary depending on the route. The ride from the main train station to the Oktoberfest or back is nice and still within the price range.
