Oktoberfest tradition: Shooting competitions in the Schützen-Festzelt

The first Schützen-Festhalle was opened at the Oktoberfest as early as 1926, but due to insufficient capacity it was used almost exclusively as a venue for shooting competitions. At that time, participants still went to the neighboring Schottenhamel tent to eat. It was not until the 1960s that the Schützen-Festzelt also developed into a gastronomic attraction. The tent was completely renovated in 2004 and 2015.

However, the shooting ranges integrated into the tent, where the Bavarian Shooting Association organizes its traditional Oktoberfest shooting event every year, which can be watched by guests, are still considered a special feature today.

Atmosphere in the Schützen-Festzelt

Sebastian Lehner

The tent below the Bavaria impresses with its balcony and all-round interior gallery. It is also the first Oktoberfest tent to have a windbreak all around the garden.

The audience, which covers all generations, consists mainly of locals and regulars from shooting clubs. As rock and pop music is played in the evenings and the atmosphere is really heated up, the guests have become younger and younger in recent years and the Schützen-Festzelt has become a meeting place for Munich's youth alongside the Hacker tent and the Schottenhamel. However, this is also a popular place for the finer Munich society and German nobility to celebrate.
