Oktoberfest tradition of the Weinzelt: party atmosphere without festival beer
Wine and Oktoberfest tradition don't go together? Quite the opposite, because wine has been served at the supposed “beer festival” for over 200 years. There used to be smaller stalls and bodegas where you could enjoy the grape juice, but in 1984 the Nymphenburg sparkling wine cellar and the Paulaner brewery opened the Weinzelt at the Oktoberfest. It is run by the Kuffler family, who also run the Spatenhaus at the Opera, for example. The Weinzelt was completely redesigned in 2005.
As the name suggests, wine and sparkling wine are traditionally drunk here, but you don't have to miss out on beer. However, the beer served here is not the festival beer familiar from the other tents, but wheat beer from the Paulaner brewery. Not in beer mugs, by the way, and only until 9 p.m., because then the name really does say it all in the tent.
Atmosphere in Kufflers Weinzelt: partying until 1 am and queer event Subavaria

The tent is known as the party tent at the Oktoberfest. This is where the party goes wild, not least because of the atmospheric music. Things really get going from around 10:30 pm, when the other tents slowly close. Many Oktoberfest professionals then flock to the Weinzelt, as the party continues here until 1am.
But the tent has also made a name for itself among fans of good food, as the Kuffler host family has a wealth of gastronomic experience in Munich. The menu in the Weinzelt therefore includes a few dishes that you won't find in other tents.
New this year is the queer event Subavaria on Tuesday, September 24. The gay-queer center Sub reserves 300 seats for its guests (tables of ten and eight - with minimum consumption - as well as individual standing places) in the tent. Bookings can be made directly via subavaria@subonline.org.
